Ian Williams is a former foreign correspondent for Channel 4 News and America’s NBC News in Russia (1992–1995) and then Asia (1995–2016). He was based first in Moscow, and then Hong Kong, Bangkok and Beijing. He has travelled and worked extensively in China, and has also covered conflicts in the Balkans, the Middle East and Ukraine. He won an Emmy and BAFTA awards for his discovery and reporting on the Serb detention camps during the war in Bosnia. He has written two novels, Beijing Smog and Zero Days, both cyber thrillers. He is also author of Every Breath You Take: China’s New Tyranny, a study of the surveillance state. His latest book, published in August 2022, is Fire of the Dragon: China’s New Cold War, a study of the threat posed by China’s growing international belligerence.
